Books are the perfect entertainment: no commercials, no batteries, hours of enjoyment for each dollar spent. What I wonder is why everybody doesn’t carry a book around for those inevitable dead spots in life.
What really knocks me out is a book that, when you’re all done reading it, you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it. That doesn’t happen much, though.
Books can truly change our lives: the lives of those who read them, the lives of those who write them. Readers and writers alike discover things they never knew about the world and about themselves.
Man Saves Baby Crawling Near Highway
A Georgia man is being hailed as a hero after saving a baby he saw crawling near a highway last Friday.
“I had seen something out of the corner of my eye, and I thought it was a baby,” Bryant Collins told WXIA-TV. “I just stopped and, when I got out, there was a baby … almost in the highway.”
The 15-month-old baby had crawled through the woods — 300 yards from home — and nearly made her way onto a highway before Collins made the rescue.
“The same that yours would have been, man … ‘What the hell is going on? A baby?’” he told WXIA.
After picking up the infant from the side of the road, Collins dialed 911. Police arrested the girl’s father Timothy Pickens and may arrest her mother as well, WXIA reported.
“Everything was pretty much superficial that we saw,” Madison County sheriff Kip Thomas said. “Honestly that’s almost a miracle: that a 15-month-old can go that far from her house, into the woods, fall down an embankment, wind up near a major highway, and really not get hurt that bad.”
Ultimately, Collins stayed with the baby for about two hours.
“The baby started crying,” he told WXIA, “so I turned my phone on and let her listen to some gospel music, and she calmed right down.”
Collins added to the local outlet that he is an ex-convict who served time and reformed himself in prison.
“I did ten years in the federal institution for manufacturing cocaine,” he said. “When I was in prison, I made a very conscientious effort to change, and I did.”
According to WXIA, he’s been clean for five years and now works as an auto repairman.
item #12192021902 in the ‘stuff that is making me cry’ file today. this poor baby- i’m so glad someone kind was there to find her.
They forgot to report that when the father saw the man who recused his baby and he starting screaming “Get away from my baby” assuming the man was kidnapping his baby and ended up in handcuffs.
In typical Georgian fashion.
Everything tells me that I am about to make a wrong decision, but making mistakes is just part of life. What does the world want of me? Does it want me to take no risks, to go back to where I came from because I didn’t have the courage to say “yes” to life?
There are moments when troubles enter our lives and we can do nothing to avoid them.
But they are there for a reason. Only when we have overcome them will we understand why they were there.
